We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the late 17th century, the commode is a low chest of drawers designed to provide elegant storage. During the 18th and 19th centuries, commodes became central decorative pieces in French and European interiors, featuring elaborate veneers, curved profiles, and decorative metal fittings.

Craftsmen typically utilized oak or pine framing overlaid with decorative timber veneers, such as burr walnut, kingwood, or rosewood. Secondary elements were secured using hand-cut dovetail joints, while decorative hardware was cast in bronze or brass, often gilded or finished with an aged patina.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, unevenness in timber shrinkage along the back boards, and cast metal mounts tailored to fit the specific contours of the piece. The wear on drawer runners and natural oxidisation on the timber underside also indicate genuine age.

A small commode functions effectively as a focal point in an entryway, as an occasional side piece in a living room, or as a bedside table in a master suite. The warm walnut grain and polished brass mounts contrast well against contemporary neutral paint schemes and simple architectural lines.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, and uneven fading.
