A Lovely William Comyns Victorian Cast Silver Bonbon Spoon

19th century
Description

A lovely William Comyns pierced silver bonbon spoon, from the late Victorian era. This superb example has a fully cast and lightly gilt pierced bowl, featuring flowers, leaves, mythical birds and a central Mermaid figure. The floral motifs are repeated on the shaped and pierced handle. As one would expect from this superior maker, the spoon is of excellent gauge silver and good quality. Bonbon spoons were used for serving, the pierced bowl allowing the powdered sugar to fall through, leaving just the sweetmeat. An eye catching and practical piece. Dimensions below.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian bonbon spoon is a decorative, often pierced or cast silver utensil designed during the late nineteenth century specifically for serving sweetmeats, confectionery, or small delicacies.

These utensils were typically crafted from hallmarked sterling silver using casting, piercing, and hand-chasing techniques to create intricate openwork patterns.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks, including the makers mark W.C for William Comyns, the lion passant for sterling quality, an assay office mark, and a date letter.

Small silver objects can be displayed in a glass-fronted cabinet, arranged on a dining sideboard alongside glass table accessories, or incorporated into a flatware collection.

Clean silver gently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist polish, avoid harsh chemical dips, and store in a low-humidity environment wrapped in anti-tarnish fabric.
