Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian decorative bindings frequently featured full or half calfskin and morocco leather, ornamented with gold leaf tooling along the spine and boards. These editions often contained natural history or educational works and were bound to serve as both literary resources and decorative display items.

19th-century books were typically bound using tanned calfskin, pigskin, or goat leather over thick paperboard covers. Gilding was applied using hand-heated brass tools and genuine gold leaf, while interior pages were stitched into signatures using linen thread.

Authentic volumes feature hand-tooled gilt details with slight variations, genuine raised spine bands aligned with internal sewing structures, and period-specific typography on title pages. Paper from this era often exhibits light foxing or age-appropriate toning without uniform artificial distressing.

Interior designers arrange leather volumes in vertical stacks on coffee tables, display them upright on mantlepieces, or integrate them into curated bookshelf vignettes. Stacking books horizontally creates varied heights for displaying small decorative accessories or brass objects.

Keep leather books away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking or board warping. Dust spines lightly with a soft brush and store them upright supported by adjacent books to maintain structural integrity.
