Late Georgian Mahogany Gentleman’s Dressing Table / Vanity with Mirror

18th century
Description

A fine late Georgian mahogany gentleman’s dressing table of elegant and practical design, dating to the late 18th / early 19th century.

Delightful George III period mahogany and oak dressing table.

The well-figured rectangular hinged top opens to reveal a fitted interior with divided compartments, flanking an easel backed mirror.

The drawer configuration consists of two dummy drawers over two short drawers, all retaining their original brass handles and escutcheons. The drawers are oak-lined throughout, a hallmark of quality Georgian cabinet making.

The table stands on slender tapering legs terminating in original brass castors, giving it a light and refined stance. The mahogany has developed a rich colour and patina consistent with age.

A versatile and increasingly sought-after form, ideal as a gentleman’s dressing table, or elegant occasional table.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late 18th century, a Georgian gentlemans dressing table is a compact piece of multi-functional furniture designed with hidden compartments, fold-out tops, and internal storage for grooming accessories.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers, frequently featuring boxwood inlay stringing, brass drop handles, and brass castors on tapered legs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, historical brass hardware, natural oxidisation on the timber underside, and original folding or counterweighted mechanisms.

This compact furniture piece functions effectively as a bedroom vanity, side table, or hall console, providing structured timber warmth within modern or traditional interior schemes.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to protect the patina.
