Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire furniture emerged during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, drawing heavy inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian architecture. Key characteristics include symmetrical geometric forms, rich dark hardwoods like mahogany, and classical gilt bronze ormolu mounts depicting motifs such as swans, eagles, and laurel wreaths.

Empire style armchairs typically utilise solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over hardwood frames. Decorative accents are crafted from gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, while upholstery historically varied from rich silks and damasks to durable modern linens.

Authentic 19th-century Empire and early 20th-century Empire Revival chairs feature hand-cast or chased ormolu mounts attached directly to dark polished wood. Frames demonstrate solid joinery, classical architectural proportions, and characteristic splayed sabre legs or tapered front legs.

Empire armchairs can be paired with modern neutral sofas to create visual contrast in living rooms, or positioned flanking a fireplace or console table. Neutral contemporary upholstery allows the warm tone of the mahogany and metallic luster of the bronze mounts to fit smoothly into minimalist schemes.

Mahogany wood should be dusted regularly with a dry soft cloth and polished periodically with beeswax. Ormolu mounts should be gently cleaned with a dry brush to remove dust in crevices, avoiding chemical metal polishes that can strip the original gilded layer.
