19th century
Description

'The Plays Of William Shakespeare, Printed From The Text Of Samuel Johnson, George Steevens and Isaac Reed', complete in 12 volumes. 1807 edition.

Each volume is handsomely bound in full calf leather. The volumes retain their original spines with five raised bands, gilt and blind-stamped decoration and '1807' stamped in gilt to the base of each. The board leather of each volume has been historically and sympathetically replaced (please see photographs). The volumes show signs of shelf wear with some staining to the boards of some volumes but generally present well. Bindings of each volume remain very tight.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bookbinding during the early 19th century in Britain favoured full or half calfskin bindings with gilded tooling along the spine. Cords were sewn into the text block creating distinct raised bands across the spine, framed by intricate geometric or floral foliage stamp designs.

Bindings from this period typically utilized hand-tanned calfskin leather over pasteboard covers. Spine decorations and lettering were stamped using gold leaf, while text pages were printed on durable cotton or linen rag paper.

Authentic volumes display period-correct title pages with publisher details, printed publication dates, and original rag paper showing natural age tone or foxing. The leather spine bindings should show natural surface wear, raised sewing cords, and period gilding.

Multi-volume sets can be displayed uniformly along wooden bookshelves, stacked horizontally on console tables as bases for small object displays, or arranged on mantelpieces to introduce historical visual interest.

Keep leather-bound volumes away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and excess humidity to prevent dryness or mould growth. Handle books by the middle of the spine rather than the headband, and maintain stable environmental conditions.
