Antique Set of 10 Irish Mid 19th Century Carved Mahogany Dining Chairs Carvers Ball & Claw Feet

19th century
Description

A fine set of ten antique Irish mid 19th century carved mahogany dining chairs including two carvers, beautifully made in the Georgian taste with elegant proportions and excellent quality carving throughout. The shaped top rails with reeded detail lead down to finely pierced splat backs centred with carved shells and foliate decoration, a design strongly associated with Irish craftsmanship of the period.

The chairs stand on elegant cabriole legs terminating in well defined ball and claw feet, a classic sign of quality and skilled carving. The carvers have generous shaped arms with a smooth flowing line, designed for comfort at the head of the table while still maintaining the refined look of the set.

The drop-in seats are upholstered in a smart neutral striped fabric which works well in both traditional and modern interiors. Sets like this were made for formal dining rooms, offering both durability and style for long dinners and entertaining, and this example does exactly that while remaining practical for everyday use today.

Condition report

Very good antique condition with a rich deep colour to the mahogany. Minor age related marks as expected. Solid and sturdy throughout. The new upholstery is clean and ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style furniture from the 19th century, particularly Irish pieces, is characterised by robust mahogany construction, ornate hand-carvings, pierced back splats, and cabriole legs terminating in detailed ball and claw feet.

These chairs were typically crafted using dense, high-grade mahogany wood for structural durability and intricate carving, paired with traditional horsehair padding and woven fabric upholstery on drop-in or fixed seats.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, natural wear to the underside of the frames, heavy dense wood weight, and subtle hand-carving variations rather than uniform machine carving.

Pairing dark carved mahogany chairs with a minimalist oak or contemporary glass dining table creates a balanced contrast, while neutral upholstery fabrics help integrate classic wood tones into contemporary colour schemes.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent cracking and fading; regularly nourish the timber using a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft microfibre cloth.
