Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A ladderback chair is a traditional seating design defined by horizontal cross-rails fixed between vertical uprights, resembling a ladder. Originating in medieval Europe, the form evolved through the 18th and 19th centuries into sophisticated refined styles featuring carved woodwork and upholstered seating.

Victorian cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, secured with mortise and tenon joinery. Seats were commonly crafted as drop-in timber frames upholstered in woven tapestry, velvet, or horsehair, reinforced below with solid perimeter stretchers.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-carved rail detailings, crisp mortise-and-tenon joints, and subtle surface irregularities consistent with period hand tools. Mahogany from this era typically exhibits a rich deep tone with natural patina accumulated around high-wear areas like stretchers and back rails.

A single mahogany side chair functions well as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom corner, or paired alongside a modern writing desk. The warmth of polished dark wood contrasts effectively against clean neutral walls and contemporary artwork.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice yearly following the natural grain. Position the piece away from direct radiator heat and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, joint loosening, and fabric fading.
