Regency Mahogany Scroll Arm Chair

19th century
Description

A good quality mahogany carver chair dating from the early 19th century. It is a typically stylish regency design - a gently curving back with rope twist top, sabre legs and reeded lined detail. This continuous curving line formed by the sides of the back, the seat rail and the chair legs are essential features of a 'Trafalgar' chair. This design was popular around 1810 with naval references, such as the rope-twist back rail, having been popular in the time of Lord Nelson. It has a drop-in seat pad which has been recently upholstered in a beautiful red leather.

The chair stands approximately 33" (84cm) high and is 21" (53cm) wide arm to arm. The seat is 19" (48cm) deep and 18 1/2" (47cm) high.

The chair is in very good condition for its age with a beautiful rich patina. It has been well looked after and maintained over the years and as such has a few good old repairs but nothing detrimental and the chair is strong and sturdy. The chair has been cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency seating furniture, dating from the early 19th century, is characterised by neoclassical proportions, swept scroll arms, reeded ornamentation, and swept saber or curved legs influenced by Greco-Roman designs.

Primary woods included dense mahogany and rosewood, often paired with brass inlay or reeded carving, alongside drop-in or tightly upholstered leather and cane seating surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details such as reeding and rope-twist rails, original joinery including mortise and tenon joints, and natural age-related patination on the timber frame.

A Regency armchair serves as a focal point when placed alongside clean-lined contemporary desks, within a formal library setting, or as an accent piece paired with modern minimalist upholstery.

Timber surfaces require regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of beeswax, while leather upholstery benefits from gentle conditioning to prevent drying and cracking.
