Welsh Dresser Base with Spice Drawers C.1800

19th century
Description

George III oak breakfront Welsh dresser base with spice drawers c.1800. Featuring a plate stand and a row of six small spice drawers over the main top (height 37"), made from a single board of pronounced grain. Breakfront base with a deeper central bank of four drawers of graduated heights flanked on each side with a drawer and cupboard (internal depth 17"). Unusual secret compartment tucked behind the runner of the right hand drawer. Cock beaded drawer fronts, raised mouldings to the door panels and moulded pilasters either site of the middle drawers. Inlaid bone escutcheons and original brass swan neck handles. The brass catches to the doors are most likely later historical additions. Moulded trim around the base and raised on shaped bracket feet at the front and sides. Oak side panels, deal drawer linings and back panels. Excellent condition and particularly good mellow honey coloured timber. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied for the doors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Welsh dresser base originated in regional Britain during the late 17th and 18th centuries as a functional piece of storage furniture for dining rooms and kitchens. Designed primarily to store tableware, linens, and spices, these low cabinet units often functioned independently or beneath open plate racks.

Georgian dresser bases were predominantly crafted from solid native hardwoods, most commonly oak, pine, or fruitwood. Construction incorporated hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, brass swan-neck handles, and occasionally decorative bone or ivory keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-tooling such as pit-saw marks, irregular drawer linings, and hand-forged iron or brass hardware. Natural timber shrinkage over centuries often results in slightly uneven panel dimensions and a deep, aged surface patina.

A dresser base serves effectively as a statement sideboard in a contemporary hallway, dining space, or living room. Setting warm timber tones against neutral stone or painted walls creates a balanced contrast alongside modern art and minimalist tabletop accessories.

Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasional applications of beeswax polish maintain the natural grain and protective finish. Maintaining consistent indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources prevents cracking or warping.
