Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish Georgian sideboards typically feature a distinctive stage top superstructure raised above the main surface, incorporating additional drawers or compartments. Popularised in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these pieces were designed for formal dining rooms to serve food and store tableware.

Georgian sideboards were predominantly constructed from solid timber and mahogany veneers, often embellished with satinwood or boxwood line inlay. Components were joined using hand-cut dovetails, complemented by cast brass handles and steel lock mechanisms.

Authenticity can be verified through hand-sawn timber marks, unpainted secondary woods such as pine or oak on drawer interiors, and hand-cut dovetail joints. Original brass drop handles often display hand-finished irregularities and natural surface patination.

A Georgian sideboard functions as a focal point in a hallway or open-plan living area, serving as a console or display surface. Pairing the rich mahogany wood with contemporary artwork or neutral wall shades balances historical craftsmanship with modern design.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year. Position the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from drying or splitting.
