Pair of 19th Century Victorian Walnut Hall Chairs with Barley Twist Supports

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome and unusual pair of 19th century Victorian walnut hall chairs, featuring beautifully turned barley twist supports and finely carved frames. These chairs have been professionally reupholstered in luxurious Lee Jofa “Taplow” velvet in Clay Plum, giving them a refined and contemporary feel while complementing the warmth and richness of the walnut. With their elegant proportions and distinctive form, they make ideal hall, bedroom or occasional chairs, offering both decorative impact and practical use. Of particular note is their provenance from Lackington Mill, Dorset, adding an extra layer of interest and history to an already characterful pair. The combination of authentic Victorian craftsmanship, quality walnut construction, and high-end upholstery makes these a rare and versatile decorative seating option. Seat Height 34 cm (Lower seat height is typical of this style, making them best suited as hall or occasional chairs rather than formal dining seating.)

Condition: Excellent condition. Solid walnut frames with a lovely aged patina. Recently and professionally upholstered to a high standard. Minor age-related wear consistent with their period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian hall chairs were designed primarily for entryways and reception spaces, featuring upright frames, decorative carving, and historicist design influences such as Carolean revival barley twist supports and shaped crestings.

High-grade dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak were predominantly used, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and finished with hand-rubbed french polish or natural wax.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-carved details with subtle variations, natural oxidisation on unpolished timber undersides, original joinery marks, and evidence of historical upholstery work.

Positioning a pair of carved wooden hall chairs in a hallway or foyer creates an architectural focal point, balancing rich historic woodwork with contemporary clean-lined interior finishes.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the chairs away from direct radiator heat to prevent wood shrinkage.
