Early 20th Century Mahogany Drop-leaf Occasional Table by Andrew Thomson & Sons

1900 - 1920
Description

A refined early 20th century mahogany drop-leaf occasional table by the respected Scottish maker Andrew Thomson & Sons, Glasgow. Of elegant and highly practical form, the table features a rectangular top with two drop leaves, allowing it to be used compactly or fully extended as required. The frieze is fitted with two drawers, each retaining their original brass handles, providing useful storage. Raised on distinctive lyre end supports united by a turned stretcher, and set on original castors, the piece has a lightness and versatility that makes it ideal for a variety of settings — as a side table, lamp table or compact writing table. A well-proportioned and attractive example with a warm mahogany tone, combining functionality with classic Edwardian design.

Dimensions: Height: 55 cm, Width (closed): 65 cm, Width (open): 105 cm, Depth: 40 cm

Condition: In very good antique condition, with light wear consistent with age and use. The colour and patina are even and pleasing, and the table is structurally sound.

Declaration

Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this Mahogany Drop Leaf Table to the 1910s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a drop-leaf sofa table features hinged flaps at either end to adjust surface area, traditionally placed behind a sofa or against a wall.

High-density timbers such as solid mahogany and mahogany veneers are standard, often combined with brass hardware, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and brass castors.

Look for original brass drop handles, natural age-related patination on the timber, makers marks or stamps, turned cross-stretchers, and traditional hinged wooden rule joints supporting the leaves.

Position the table behind a contemporary sofa or along an entryway wall, extending the leaves when additional surface area is required for lamps, ceramics, or books.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and protect the surface from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat sources.
