Lath Back Windsor Chair in Beech and Elm, Circa 1860

19th century
Description

Lovely example of this classic chair with some rarely seen details, especially in the Elm scroll-shape arms which nicely fit the hand and are very tactile. The seat too, is typically Elm, with plenty of width, so it doesn’t pinch like some later chairs do – ensuring it’s very comfortable. The legs, curvy, shaped uprights to the back and top rail are all in Beach with lovely patination.

We have carefully cleaned and revived the polished surfaces, preserving it’s original finish and re-waxing the piece to a lovely warm glow.

It’s a very old chair, so you’d expect to see the odd repair, with marks of use here and there but it is a lovely comfortable homely piece, you can see yourself sitting in by a roaring fire with a nice glass of ale and a book!

Dimensions:

Height is 105cm (41.3inches)

Width is 61cm (24.0inches)

Depth is 50cm (19.7inches)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lath back Windsor chair is a regional British seating design featuring flat vertical wooden laths inset into a shaped top rail and a solid contoured wooden seat, supported by turned legs.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically feature a solid elm seat due to its strength and resistance to splitting, with turned elements such as legs, stretchers, and back laths made from beech, ash, or fruitwood.

Authentic 19th-century examples often exhibit a hand-carved saddle-shaped elm seat, wedged tenon joinery beneath the seat, natural wear to turned legs, and rich surface patination.

An antique Windsor armchair works well as an accent chair beside a reading light, grouped around a rustic dining table, or placed in an entryway to bring warmth and texture into contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood grain and protective patina, avoiding silicone sprays and direct heat sources.
