Antique Original Victorian Elm Seat Splat Lathe Back Fireside Arm Chair C1880

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Splat Back Armchair .

An original fireside chair with a beautifully worn patina.

We bring to you this charming example of a Victorian 19th century Splat back fireside armchair in lovely condition with a wonderfully aged and rustic appearance. This armchair is of larger proportions unusually having an extra stretcher rail to the rear for added support (original to the item). This lovely country chair is made from a combination of woods that contribute to its nice light colour and distinctive grain. The broad, deeply-dished, and comfortably-shaped seat is made of Elm, showcasing a prominent and attractive grain pattern. The arms and the curving yoke at the top of the back are crafted from a fruitwood, which along with the rest of the chair's structure, provides a warm tone that complements the elm.

The chair's back is characterised by a series of curved slats, set between the seat and the curved top rail. Supporting the arms are two pairs of beautifully turned baluster supports, which repeat the highly decorative turned pattern found on the four legs.

Finally, the chair stands on its durable base with the centre stretcher and aforementioned extra rear stretcher. The overall impression is one of solid craftsmanship, comfort, and enduring farmhouse country style.

The chair is in strong condition with no joint movement or breaks, is free from woodworm and has been thoroughly checked over in our workshop.

We have cleaned and waxed this chair to protect and preserve the finish making this item completely ready for its new home.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lathe back fireside armchair, also known as a lath back chair, is a traditional 19th-century British country design featuring flat vertical wooden slats across the backrest, shaped armrests, and turned legs, historically positioned near the hearth.

These chairs were commonly built using native British hardwoods, frequently featuring a solid elm seat due to its resistance to splitting, paired with beech, ash, or oak for the turned legs, stretchers, and back laths.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-turned spindles, wedged or mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural surface wear on the armrests, and a contoured saddle seat exhibiting distinct grain figure.

A traditional lathe back chair functions well as a characterful accent piece in a modern living room, hallway, or study when contrasted with minimalist decor, textured throws, or contemporary lighting.

Dust the wooden framework regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and protect the original surface finish, avoiding direct exposure to heat sources.
