Antique William IV English Figured Mahogany Pedestal Tilt Top Dining Table

19th century
Description

An antique William IV English figured mahogany pedestal dining table of exceptional quality featuring a solid tilt top and raised on a bold central column with finely carved feet.

This is a particularly elegant example, the well proportioned rectangular top displaying a rich even colour and attractive figuring with softly rounded corners that give a refined and timeless look. Unlike extending or drop leaf tables this piece retains its original solid one piece top giving it a greater sense of permanence and quality.

The top tilts to a vertical position for storage, a practical feature that allowed these tables to be moved aside when not in use making them ideal for dining rooms and reception spaces where flexibility was required.

The base is of outstanding form with a substantial turned column leading to a shaped quadripartite platform and beautifully carved lobed feet. This strong architectural design is typical of the William IV period combining confident proportions with restrained decoration.

A refined and highly usable dining table offering both decorative impact and practical function, equally suited to a classic or contemporary interior.

Condition report

Very good antique condition with age related wear, marks and surface patina in keeping with age and use. Nicely polished and well presented. The tilt mechanism works as it should and the table is solid and ready for use.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1830 and 1837, William IV furniture serves as a transitional style between Regency classicism and Victorian ornamentation. It is characterised by robust proportions, bold curves, fine mahogany timbers, and carved decorative elements such as lotus leaves and reeding.

These tables were typically crafted from solid and veneered hardwoods, notably mahogany, rosewood, and oak. They feature a central block and brass catch mechanism that enables the top to pivot vertically on a sturdy pedestal base.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy hand-carved details, rich flame or figured mahogany veneers, and original brass latch hardware. Construction features such as hand-cut joinery on the underframe and period-appropriate castors also assist in identification.

When not in use, the tabletop can be tilted vertically and positioned against a wall or in a corner to showcase the wood grain as a decorative panel. Paired with modern dining chairs, it creates an eclectic balance between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish occasionally using a high-quality beeswax paste. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or uneven fading of the finish.
