Edwardian Lebus 6 Sectional Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare early 20th‑century Lebus double‑width sectional bookcase, complete with its original brass escutcheon stamped “THE LEBUS BOOKCASE.” Formed of six glazed lift‑up sections arranged in two columns, this example retains its original single-piece gallery top — an unusual feature that indicates it was supplied as a complete wide unit rather than two separate stacks.

The bookcase is in excellent order, with all doors running smoothly and retaining their original brass knobs. The timber has a warm, even colour and a well‑preserved patina. A scarce and highly practical piece of English library furniture.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sectional bookcase is a modular storage system popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Built in separate stackable units, each tier features an independent glass door designed to lift and slide back into the frame.

Lebus sectional bookcases were primarily constructed from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring glass panel doors and small brass knobs or metal mechanism fittings.

Authentic Lebus pieces often feature stamped maker marks or metal trade labels inside the sections, signature scissor-action metal door mechanisms, and precise joinery designed for interlocking stackability.

An antique sectional bookcase works exceptionally well as a focal piece in a contemporary home office, hallway, or living space, pairing classic timber warmth with practical dust-free display for books or art objects.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep glass clean using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame.
