Georgian Mahogany Inlaid Tea Caddy

18th century
Description

A late 18th century mahogany tea caddy with very pretty oval inlaid details to the top and front, with boxwood stringing to the corners. The mahogany has a lovely rippled effect and contrasts well with the inlays…

Condition: I think there would have been a handle to the centre of the lid originally - there are marks consistent with what a drop type handle would leave behind, and a small central hole to the inlay. The internal lids are missing. Some minor surface wear but in good condition overall.

Dimensions:

Width - 18.5cm

Depth - 11.2cm

Height - 12cm

Free UK delivery - the item will be sent using a tracked and signed for service. If you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere please get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian tea caddy is a lockable wooden container produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, designed specifically to store valuable loose tea leaves safely.

These caddies were typically constructed from mahogany or satinwood, often featuring delicate marquetry inlays, boxwood stringing, and bone or brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, natural timber shrinkage over time, period-correct lock mechanisms, and remnants of original foil linings inside.

Display the tea caddy on a sideboard, bookshelf, or console table alongside modern ceramics or art books to create a layered, eclectically curated display.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and severe humidity changes.
