Fine Quality Early 19th Century Regency Mahogany Drum or Library Table, Possibly Irish

19th century
Description

A fine quality early 19th century (circa 1820) Regency mahogany drum or library table with fine, faded top and unusual carved base, possibly Irish.

This fine quality table consists of a black leather tooled revolving top with outer banding of mahogany and boxwood stringing leading down to a moulded edge of mahogany and boxwood stringing.

This leads down to eight mahogany frieze drawers with boxwood stringing decoration, all oak lined with recessed brass locks similar to Bramah, one drawer stamped with number 2326 - this number possibly being linked to a cabinetmaker or being an item from an inventory belonging to an important house.

The top is supported on an unusual four-splay carved base consisting of four superbly carved S scroll supports leading down to carved paterae to each corner and square plinth with carved scroll decoration, the four splay legs consisting of superbly carved foliate decoration to the front and scroll and foliate decoration to the sides terminating on original brass castors.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a drum table is a circular pedestal table featuring a deep frieze fitted with drawers around its circumference, often designed to rotate for easy access.

These tables were typically crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, frequently featuring tool-embossed leather writing surfaces, brass castors, and intricate stringing or inlay work.

Authentic early 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, original cast-brass cap castors, hand-carved pedestal supports, and period-correct brass drawer handles.

A drum table functions effectively as a focal point in an entrance hall, a central desk in a home library, or an accent table within a formal sitting room.

Preserve the surface by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, applying beeswax sparingly along the wood grain annually, and protecting the leather top from direct sunlight and heat sources.
