Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Open salt cellars are small container vessels designed to hold table salt prior to the widespread addition of anti-caking agents in the twentieth century. They were standard table appointments from the Middle Ages through to the late Victorian era, typically accompanied by tiny salt spoons to serve the loose salt.

Victorian silver salt cellars were raised from sterling silver sheets using hammering, chasing, and repousse techniques to create raised floral or acanthus relief patterns. Sets were frequently fitted with gilding on interior surfaces to protect the silver from corrosion caused by salt, and stored in lined leather cases.

Authentic London sterling silver bears a standard set of stamped marks: the lion passant for sterling purity, a leopards head for the London assay office, a specific date letter representing the year of manufacture, and a makers mark consisting of the silversmiths initials.

Antique silver salt cellars can be incorporated into modern dining tables as functional serving dishes for gourmet salts, spices, or condiments. Alternatively, they can be displayed on a sideboard tray or used on a dressing table to store small jewellery items like rings.

Silver should be washed promptly after contact with salt, as salt accelerates tarnishing and pitting. Clean gentle surfaces with a dedicated silver polishing cloth or mild silver foam, avoiding abrasive scrubbers, and ensure pieces are thoroughly dried before storing in dry, anti-tarnish environments.
