Royal Worcester Figure of Bonneted Lady, C.1920

Description

A small and finely executed Royal Worcester porcelain figure of a bonneted woman, produced around 1920. The composition reflects the restrained aesthetic of the factory’s later cabinet figures.

The figure is modelled with quiet poise, the head gently inclined and the pose deliberately simple. This shift away from narrative detail toward controlled decorative presence is typical of Worcester production in the late 1910s-1920s.

The decoration consists of delicately scattered floral sprigs in purple and pink tones, carefully spaced to retain the clarity of the ivory ground. Gilding is used sparingly, applied in fine lines that enhance rather than dominate the surface.

The modelling remains precise and economical, with minimal undercutting and a smooth integration of the figure and base. The tree stump serves as a discreet compositional support. The puce printed Royal Worcester England mark with star device and dot system is present to the underside. The visible configuration is consistent with a 1920 date, although partially obscured by an impressed mark.

Examples of this type are appreciated for their balance and refined surface treatment within the later Worcester tradition.
