Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Snuff boxes became essential personal accessories during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for storing pulverized tobacco. In the Victorian era, silver snuff boxes were frequently awarded as commemorative gifts or presentation pieces to mark significant occasions, featuring custom inscriptions and elaborate hand engraving.

Victorian silver boxes were typically made from sterling silver, hallmarked to guarantee metal purity. Craftsmanship techniques involved hand-chasing, die-stamping, engine turning, and fine foliage scroll engraving, often finished with gilding on the interior to prevent corrosion from contents.

Authentic pieces bear official assay office hallmarks, including the sterling lion passant, a makers mark, a town mark, and a date letter. Detailed hand-engraved inscriptions, tight flush-fitting hinges, and natural age-related oxidisation in deeper recesses also indicate period authenticity.

Small antique silver boxes serve as elegant accents on an executive office desk, styled atop a stack of vintage books, or placed inside a glass curio cabinet. They add historical interest and subtle metallic texture when grouped with other desk accessories.

Maintain sterling silver by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and polishing occasionally with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth. Avoid harsh liquid dips or abrasive polishes that can strip fine engraved details or damage natural patina.
