Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis Philippe style originated in mid-nineteenth-century France, characterized by clean lines, rounded upper corners, and a flat rectangular base. Frames typically feature subtle mouldings, wood veneers, ebonised borders, and delicate gilt beadwork rather than complex rococo carvings.

These frames were constructed from pine or secondary hardwoods coated with gesso, then finished with gold leaf, dark paint or ebonising, and decorative wood veneers such as walnut, maple, or faux-marbled patterns. The mirror glass itself was traditionally mercury-backed glass or early silvered glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished wooden backing boards, visible original joins, age-related oxidation or foxing on the glass silvering, and soft wear to the gilding where the underlying reddish clay bolemight show through.

Positioning a Louis Philippe mirror above a fireplace mantel, hallway console, or in a powder room introduces geometric softening due to its curved upper shoulders. The contrast between dark ebonised tones and warm gilding complements both minimalist modern decor and traditional interiors.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water on gilded areas. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than onto the glass to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame profile.
