Vanitas Still Life by A. Fremont (French School). Oil on Canvas.

1920 - 1940
Description

A fantastic early 20th century vanitas still life, French School, c.1930s. Signed 'A. Fremont' to the lower right. Unframed.

A vanitas paining symbolises the transience of life, the futility of worldly pleasures and the inevitability of death. This work depicts a skull atop a book with an artist's palette and paintbrushes, with a depiction of a red chalk drawing pinned to the pine boards above the scene. The work is well painted with fantastic use of shadow to create an effective three dimensional illusion. There is a small hole to the canvas to the left of the book. Verso there is evidence of a historic repair (please see photographs).

A striking work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vanitas is a genre of still life artwork containing symbolic objects designed to remind viewers of mortality and the transience of earthly pleasures. Common motifs include human skulls, extinguished candles, timepieces, and artistic tools.

French School paintings from the nineteenth century typically utilised oil pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto stretched cotton or linen canvas, often grounded with gesso.

Authentic period oil paintings usually display natural craquelure across the varnish or paint surface, original wood stretchers, age-appropriate oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and artist signatures.

A Vanitas painting can be styled above a timber sideboard, within a gallery wall, or in a dark-toned library space to create a scholarly and structured focal point.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, dampness, and extreme temperature fluctuations, cleaning gently only with a soft dry brush to prevent damage to delicate paint layers.
