Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France, designed to fit into the wall space or trumeau between windows or above a fireplace mantle. They traditionally feature a mirror paired with a painted or carved wooden panel within a single architectural frame.

Authentic trumeau mirrors were constructed using solid timber frames coated with gesso, paint, and gold leaf gilding. The reflective panels feature mercury or silver-backed glass, often exhibiting natural foxing over extended periods.

Authentic period trumeau mirrors display hand-carved decorative motifs, layered gesso underneath distressed gilding, and original backing boards made of hand-sawn timber. Look for age-appropriate wear, visible lap joints, and natural oxidisation on the glass mirror.

Position a trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or console table to create an architectural focal point. The vertical proportions elongate wall space, while the weathered gilt finish introduces texture to neutral contemporary schemes.

Dust the gilded and painted timber frame gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leaf and aged paint. Avoid liquid cleaners, solvents, or damp sponges on the frame, and clean glass carefully with a lightly moistened cloth.
