Fine Quality Edwardian Walnut Writing Desk by Gill & Reigate, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality Edwardian walnut writing desk of elegant proportions, attributed to Gill & Reigate and dating to circa 1900. Raised on graceful cabriole legs with finely shaped knees, the desk displays excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout. The richly figured walnut veneers are of particularly good colour and patination, complemented by subtle line inlay and delicate engraved decoration to the knees and top corners.

The serpentine front houses an arrangement of five drawers, all oak-lined and fitted with original brass swan-neck handles. The central kneehole provides comfortable seating, making the piece as practical as it is decorative. The drawers are well-constructed with traditional dovetail joints, reflecting the high standard of cabinetmaking associated with quality Edwardian furniture.

The top retains its original inset leather writing surface, attractively tooled and now beautifully worn with age, adding to the desk’s character and authenticity. The sides and back are finished to the same high standard, allowing the desk to stand freely within a room if desired.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian writing desks often drew inspiration from earlier 18th-century styles such as Queen Anne and Chippendale, featuring refined proportions, cabriole legs, and delicate marquetry or crossbanded veneers.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised figured woods such as walnut, mahogany, and satinwood, often accentuating drawer fronts with crossbanded borders, solid brass handles, and inserted leather writing surfaces known as skivers.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, stamped maker marks or brass plaques inside drawer rims, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and authentic age wear to the leather inlay and underside timber.

Pair the warm timber tones with a contemporary task lamp, neutral linen upholstery, and minimal desk accessories to create a balanced home office environment.

Keep the timber lightly dusted with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually, while conditioning the leather skiver occasionally with specialised leather balsam to prevent drying and cracking.
