Antique Bureau Cabinet, English, Walnut, Tambour, Edwardian, 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an antique bureau cabinet. An English, walnut drop-front writing desk with tambour, dating to the Edwardian period, circa 1910.

Graced with superb colour and of usefully compact stature

Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order

Select walnut stocks show fine grain interest and warm caramel hues

Of distinctive form, the tambour lower tapers outwards from the upper cabinet

Dressed to the top with a pierced fretwork upstand and accentuated with bronzed feathered scrolls

Twin field panels adorn the fall of the upper cabinet, dressed with a stout lock escutcheon — key absent

Lowering the fall, supported by the storage drawer reveals a tooled, deep crimson leather writing surface

Behind the desk space, a compliment of glass ink wells and a wide pen rest

Below, a single drawer dressed with a solid brass drop handle, and baize rests to carry the fall when lowered

At the midpoint, a galleried shelf featuring stout risers and vase turned spindles

Smooth action to the tambour lift, the inside usefully divided into three

Standing upon square section legs with shaped aprons to each side

This is a delightful antique bureau cabinet, with fine craftsmanship and of a useful proportion to benefit spaces throughout the home. Well appointed and aesthetically pleasing. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready to enjoy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian bureau cabinet is a multifunctional writing desk crafted during the early 20th century, combining writing surfaces, shelving, and storage drawers or cupboards, often featuring fine decorative fretwork and compact proportions.

Edwardian desks were typically constructed from high-quality hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and satinwood, featuring brass fittings, dovetailed drawer joints, and gold-tooled leather or velvet writing surfaces.

Authentic Edwardian walnut bureaus feature refined proportions, subtle decorative elements like pierced fretwork or spindles, original brass hardware, and timber showing characteristic grain patterns and natural aged patina.

Place the bureau cabinet in a dedicated study, hallway, or living area as a functional statement piece, styling the upper shelves with curated books, ceramics, or framed artwork to blend historic craftsmanship with modern living.

Preserve walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes.
