Vincent Chevilliard (1841-1904) - 'An Amusing Read'. Oil on Panel.

19th century
Description

'An Amusing Read', a delightful small oil on panel by Vincent Chevilliard (French, 1841-1904). Signed lower left.

The work depicts a clergyman in a summer garden laughing as he's caught unawares by a humorous line in his book. The detail throughout the work is truly exceptional with the expert depiction of light making the subject appear almost three dimensional on the gravel path against the backdrop of leaves and carefully depicted flowers.

Label for 'M. Newman Ltd, Fine Art Dealers of 43a Duke Street, London' verso. Illegible stamp to the board from which only 'Paris' and 'Lafitte' is legible, the beginning of the stamp being obscured by the later London Gallery label. Presumably the stamp is for a gallery situated on the historic street of Rue Laffitte, Paris.

A fantastic work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French clerical genre paintings typically depict members of the clergy in lighthearted, candid everyday situations, departing from solemn religious iconography to offer observational character studies.

Artists painted on seasoned wooden panels primed with a gesso ground before applying oil pigments, typically housing the work in hand-carved wood frames coated in composition ornament and gold leaf.

Authentic period panels often show natural wood grain and chamfered edges on the reverse, age-related surface craquelure, historical framing hardware, and period artist signatures or gallery labels.

Position small-scale framed artworks on a mantelpiece, floating shelf, or gallery wall alongside modern architectural elements to create a contrast between traditional ornamentation and clean lines.

Display the panel in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources to prevent wood warping, dust the surface gently with a soft brush, and consult a professional conservator for varnish cleaning.
