1930s “Everite” Pocket Watch from H Samuel

1920 - 1940
Description

1930s “Everite” pocket watch from H Samuel.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed “Everite” H Samuel, Manchester… Everite was H Samuel’s brand name for watches sold in their own shops.

In 1862 when Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law's clock-making business in Liverpool, she renamed the business H Samuel and moved the business to Manchester's Market Street where she ran the company as a mail order business.

Later on, Harriet’s son concentrated on the retail side of the business, and the first H Samuel retail store opened in Preston in 1890, closely followed by branches in Rochdale and throughout Lancashire. Since then the company has become nationwide with branches in many British High Streets today.

This particular watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made by the Dennison Watch Case Company. The case is in lovely condition with just light surface marks, nothing serious at all.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed dial is in lovely condition too with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco pocket watches produced during the 1930s typically feature clean typography, geometric case details, and streamlined dial layouts reflecting the modernist aesthetic of the interwar period.

Pocket watches from this era were frequently constructed with brass or gold-plated cases, vitreous enamel dials, blued steel hands, and mineral glass crystals over mechanical Swiss movements.

Authentic pieces generally display manufacturer hallmarks or serial numbers inside the case back, distinctive maker marks on the dial, and mechanical movements stamped with jewelling information and country of origin.

Pocket watches can be displayed on dedicated brass stands within a glass dome, styled alongside leather-bound books on a desk, or worn as a functional accessory attached to a waistcoat chain or albert strap.

The metal case should be gently wiped with a microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the dial or movement, while the mechanical movement requires professional servicing every three to five years to maintain functionality.
