Pair of Antique Leather Wing Back Armchairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A magnificent pair of antique leather wing back armchairs. They were made in England, and they date from around the 1920’s.

They are of very impressive, large proportions, the quality is absolutely amazing and they are extremely comfortable.

They sit on beautifully turned and stretchered solid walnut bases, with well shaped scrolled out arms, scrolled back wings and hump back head rests.

We have had them revived and hand coloured to a gorgeous brown tone, the legs have also been re-polished. The seat cushions are plump and feather filled, these chairs are extremely comfortable and are in great condition throughout.

The chairs are stamped with an H on the inside of the back legs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 17th-century England, the wingback armchair was designed with protruding side panels, or wings, to trap heat from an open fireplace and protect the occupant from cold draughts.

Authentic historic examples typically feature solid hardwood frames, such as oak or beech, webbed or coiled spring seating, natural horsehair or fibre padding, and full-grain brass-studded leather upholstery.

Examine the underside for hand-tacked webbing, hand-carved joinery like mortise and tenon joints, natural surface patina or craquelure on the leather, and individually driven brass studs rather than uniform modern tack strips.

Position a pair flanking a central fireplace or minimalist coffee table to create symmetry, balancing the rich dark leather with light neutral walls and textured wool throws.

Keep leather furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a specialist leather conditioner annually to maintain flexibility.
