George Edwards (16941773) was an English naturalist and illustrator known as the father of British ornithology. His detailed engravings, produced primarily for A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, featured precise scientific depictions of birds etched onto copper plates and finished with hand-applied watercolouring.

Prints from this era were produced using copperplate engraving techniques, where an artist etched line designs onto a metal plate. After printing with black ink onto handmade rag paper, individual colourists added watercolours by hand to render accurate plumage and natural backgrounds.

Authentic prints feature a visible plate markan indentation in the paper left by the copper plate edge during pressing. Under magnification, hand colouring shows subtle variations in brushwork and pigment layer thickness, unlike modern mechanical dot-matrix reproductions.
