Antique Exceptional Large Victorian Marble Mantel Clock by Philippes Paris – 8 Day Movement

19th century
Description

An exceptional large Victorian marble mantel clock of impressive scale and presence crafted in richly figured marble with contrasting tones that emphasise its architectural form. The case is bold yet refined and designed to sit as a true focal point on a mantel.

The enamel dial is signed by Philippes Paris, a 19th century Paris retailer associated with high quality French movements produced in the capital of European clockmaking. During this period Paris workshops supplied movements not only across France but throughout England where they were prized for their accuracy, durability and ease of maintenance. Retailers such as Philippes selected and finished these movements and often supplied them to the better end of the market.

The dial features Roman numerals and elegant hands with an 8 day movement that is in good working order. The twin winding apertures indicate a countwheel striking movement typical of quality mid Victorian clocks.

Clocks of this type were designed to take pride of place on the mantelpiece acting as both a reliable timekeeper and a statement of status. In the Victorian home the mantel clock was often the centrepiece of the room reflecting both taste and prosperity.

Condition Report:

In good antique condition with light age related wear. The marble is well preserved with minor surface marks consistent with age. The dial shows light ageing as expected. The movement is in good working order.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian slate and marble mantel clocks gained prominence in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, featuring architectural forms inspired by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian revival styles. Frequently fitted with French movements, these heavy desktop or mantel timepieces combined precise horology with monumental stone casing.

These timepieces were primarily constructed from Belgian black marble or slate, highlighted with incised geometric lines filled with gilt foil, brass, or bronze accents. The movements consisted of eight-day mechanical brass clockwork with pendulum escapements behind glass bezels and enamel dials.

Authentic period pieces feature substantial weight due to solid stone casing, hand-engraved scrollwork or classical friezes, and original hand-cut brass gears within the movement. Maker stamps or Parisian movement trademarks are frequently stamped on the brass back plate or painted on the dial face.

A substantial black marble clock acts as a focal point on a contemporary fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or library shelf. Pairing the dark stone structure with modern minimalist artwork or warm metal accents creates a balanced contrast between historical architecture and current design.

Black marble and slate casing should be dusted regularly with a microfibre cloth and occasionally conditioned with neutral wax polish or mineral oil to preserve the dark lustre. Mechanical clockwork requires professional cleaning and oiling by a qualified horologist every five to seven years to ensure accurate operation.
