Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Regency era, spanning roughly 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical symmetry, clean lines, and motifs inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian design. Seating from this period often incorporates turned or sabre legs, reeded frames, and carved back rails depicting nautical or classical themes.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period primarily utilised high-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and stability. Frames were assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, often decorated with satinwood or rosewood veneers, with drop-in seats cushioned using natural horsehair padding.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-carved decorative elements, subtle variations in symmetry, and dark patina within lower crevices. Inspection of the seat frame typically reveals hand-cut joinery, iron or wooden peg fastenings, and evidence of historical hand-sawing on non-visible timber surfaces.

Period mahogany seating creates visual interest when contrasted against minimalist modern dining tables made of glass, steel, or light oak. Incorporating contemporary upholstery fabrics or neutral wall tones allows the dark, carved timber silhouettes to stand out as focal features.

To preserve the timber finish, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, rubbing with the grain. Keep the chairs away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the upholstery.
