Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the original design in the late 18th century, a Davenport is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped writing surface supported above side-mounted drawers. These desks became widely popular during the 19th century, particularly in the William IV and Victorian eras, due to their space-saving footprint and storage.

High-grade figure hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut were predominantly used for the casing and exterior veneers. Inset gold-tooled leather was typically fitted to the sloped writing surface, accompanied by brass gallery railings, brass castors, and hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery.

Authentic William IV pieces from the 1830s feature architectural details including bold S-scroll or C-scroll front supports, turned bun feet, and figured veneers such as rosewood. Period construction also features hand-cut joinery, side pen drawers, and secondary drawer linings made from oak or pine.

A Davenport desk functions well in compact living areas, hall spaces, or bedroom nooks where space is limited. Pair it with a simple classic chair and low-profile brass task lighting to establish a functional, uncluttered writing area.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid veneer movement and fading. Clean dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to nourish the wood, and care for the leather inset with a specialized leather conditioner.
