Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pelta back hall chair features a distinctive backrest shaped like an ancient Greek shield, known as a pelta. Popularised during the Neoclassical and Regency periods in Britain, these wooden chairs were traditionally placed in grand entry halls to seat waiting guests.

Hall chairs from the Regency era were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. They featured unpadded, solid wooden seats and carved backrests, occasionally decorated with hand-painted armorial crests or marquetry.

Authentic period hall chairs typically display hand-cut joinery, rich natural oxidisation on the timber underside, and hand-carved detailing. The absence of upholstery springs or webbing is standard, as hall chairs were designed for temporary seating rather than prolonged relaxation.

Position a pair of hall chairs symmetrically on either side of a console table in a hallway or foyer to create an inviting entrance. They can also be placed in narrow corridors or used as accent seating beneath artwork to add historical architecture to contemporary spaces.

Clean the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to remove surface dust. Apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the mahogany, and position the chairs away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
