Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wingback armchair features high side panels or wings originally designed to shield the occupant from cold draughts and retain heat from an open fireplace. First developed in 17th-century England, the form evolved through the Queen Anne and Georgian periods to incorporate cabriole legs and decorative upholstery.

Armchairs from this era typically feature solid timber frames, such as oak, beech, or walnut, constructed with mortise and tenon joinery. Cushioning usually consists of coiled steel springs, natural horsehair or wool padding, and woven upholstery fabrics such as velvet, wool needlepoint, or tapestry.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved solid timber legs, traditional upholstery tacks along the underside of the frame, and webbed spring bases rather than modern synthetic webbing. Uniform wear on foot ends and aged frame joinery also indicate genuine historical construction.

Positioning a tapestry-upholstered wingback in a reading nook, bedroom corner, or alongside a hearth creates a warm focal point. Pairing detailed floral upholstery with neutral walls or minimalist side tables allows the intricate textile pattern to balance contemporary interior schemes.

Vacuum textile surfaces gently using a soft brush attachment to remove dust without distressing the fibres. Position the chair away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and consult a professional textile restorer for stain removal or structural repairs.
