Gilt overmantel mirrors became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as focal points in formal reception rooms. Positioned above fireplace hearths, their wide proportions and reflective surfaces were designed to bounce candlelight around high-ceilinged rooms.

These frames were typically constructed from a carved pine core coated in gesso and decorated with molded composition details. Gold leaf was applied using either water gilding or oil gilding techniques over silvered or mercury-backed glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors feature timber backboards held with hand-cut nails or screws, natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass, and minor cracking to the gesso framework. The gilding often shows age-related wear where the reddish bole undercoat bleeds through.

An overmantel mirror is traditionally mounted or rested directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to anchor a sitting room. It can also be styled above a wide dining room sideboard or entryway console table to add visual depth to modern spaces.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid using water, liquid polishes, or chemical cleaners on gilt surfaces, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and strip gold leaf.
