Description

A lovely Worcester porcelain pickle dish, moulded as a scallop shell, finely painted in the two-peony rock bird pattern, c.1754-1760. Workman's mark to the base.

It measures 11cm (4 3/8") by 9.3cm (3 5/8) wide and 2.8cm (1 1/8") high. 

In very good condition: there are three small shallow surface chips to the rim and a nick to the reverse. They are minimally detracting as can be seen. Very minor handling wear and no running to the design, a very neatly executed example.

First Period Worcester porcelain, produced between 1751 and 1783 during Dr John Walls tenure, is noted for its soapstone-fortified soft-paste body. This composition allowed the pieces to withstand boiling water without cracking, making them ideal for tableware decorated predominantly in cobalt blue underglaze patterns influenced by imported East Asian designs.

Eighteenth-century pickle dishes were typically press-moulded into naturalistic forms, such as scallop shells or leaves, using plaster moulds. Once formed, artisans applied underglaze cobalt blue decoration by hand before glazing and firing the soft-paste body in high-temperature kilns.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a slight greenish or bluish hue when held to light due to the inclusion of soapstone in the paste. Glaze shrinks away from the foot rims, and underglaze blue decoration shows fine hand-painted brushwork or early transfer prints alongside characteristic period marks such as the open crescent or workmans marks.
