Rare Pennington Liverpool Porcelain Gilliflower Leaf Tray Pickle Dish C.1780

Description

A John Pennington porcelain leaf shaped pickle dish with finely moulded feathered edge and small twig shaped handle. The edge shaded with an inky underglaze blue and the centre printed with a form of gilliflower or carnation, with smaller floral sprigs surrounding. c.1775-1780.

Provenance: Roderick Jellicoe 1993 Liverpool Exhibition number 59.

Reference: Liverpool Porcelain, Watney, colour plate 31d shows another example.

It measures 14.2cm (5 5/8") wide by 13.4cm (5 1/4") tall and 3.2cm (1 1/4") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. Two short firing cracks on the reverse only.

FAQs

Pickle dishes were small leaf- or shell-moulded serving vessels produced by English porcelain factories during the eighteenth century. They were primarily used on formal dining tables to serve relishes, pickled items, or sweetmeats alongside larger dinner services.

Liverpool porcelain manufacturers used soft-paste porcelain bodies, which often incorporated soapstone (steatite) to improve thermal resistance. Designs were painted or transfer-printed by hand using cobalt oxide blue pigment beneath a clear lead glaze prior to firing.

Authentic Georgian pieces often feature characteristic manufacturing traits such as unglazed foot rims, slight potting irregularities, small pinholes in the glaze, and warm translucency when held to a light source. Cobalt blue paint may show minor pooling or bleeding into the surrounding glaze.
