Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette portraits became prominent in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as an affordable alternative to painted oil portraits. Profiles were traced or drawn freehand, capturing the sitters exact outline before photography existed.

Silhouettes were typically rendered using black India ink, watercolour, or cut paper mounted onto cream card or plaster. Gilded examples utilised fine bronze powder or gold leaf paint applied with a tiny brush to highlight hair textures, bonnets, and collar details.

Authentic period silhouettes often feature paper backing displaying age-related toning or foxing, hand-drawn gilded accents rather than printed embellishments, and original oval brass or gilded wood frames with top-mounted hanging loops.

These small-scale works of art are most effective when grouped together on a gallery wall alongside brass sconces, hung in narrow alcoves, or mounted in pairs to create symmetrical visual balance.

Display the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading of the ink and warping of the card. Ensure the original glass remains sealed to protect the delicate gilt work and paper substrate from atmospheric pollutants.
