Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oak coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, traditionally used for storing household linens, textiles, and valuables. By the 18th century, these pieces featured sturdy mortise and tenon joinery, raised panels, and decorative carved or moulded fronts.

Mid-18th-century coffers were crafted from solid oak using mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden dowel pegs. They commonly feature panelled lids and fronts, hand-forged iron hinges, and decorative brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period coffers display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular saw marks, and pegged joinery rather than modern screws or nails. Look for genuine age-related patination, historic lock plates, and natural wear to the base of the stile legs.

An oak coffer works well positioned at the foot of a bed for storing blankets or placed in a living area as a central coffee table. Pairing the dark timber with contemporary linen upholstery and modern ceramics creates a balanced, characterful interior.

Dust the wood regularly using a clean, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent timber movement or cracking.
