Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French mirrors from the circa 1870 period, often associated with the Napoleon III style, frequently feature refined classical or Rococo revival mouldings. Frames were commonly finished in gold leaf, silver leaf, or a combination of both, adorned with prominent carved crestings such as shells, foliage, or floral garlands.

These mirrors were constructed with a solid carved timber frame coated in gessoa smooth mixture of plaster and glue. Silver leaf or gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques, over which mirror glass was set, backed by protective pine backboards.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-cut timber backboards, light oxidisation or dark spots on the reflective glass coating, and natural wear where the underlying bole or red clay shows through the silver or gold leaf finish.

A large French mirror can be hung directly above a fireplace mantel or sideboard to reflect light and enhance room proportions. Alternatively, placing it vertically as a floor-leaning piece creates a dramatic architectural statement in a hallway or bedroom.

The gilded frame should only be dusted with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or feather duster, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that degrade the delicate leaf finish. Glass cleaner should be applied carefully directly to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass.
