British Flintlock Cavalry Holster Pistol by T. Potts, London, Late 18th Century with London Proofs

Description

A good Georgian original example of a British military type flintlock cavalry holster pistol, dating from the late 18th century, circa 1775–1795.

The flat lockplate is clearly signed T. Potts, London, and the barrel retains London commercial proof marks, confirming manufacture within the London gun trade. The pistol follows the classic cavalry holster form with a heavy round barrel, swan-neck cock, belt hook to the left side of the stock, and brass mounted furniture as typically encountered on London trade military pistols of the period.

The walnut stock has the characteristic rounded club butt and retains a wood ramrod with brass tip. The pistol shows honest service wear consistent with age and use and remains an attractive and well-proportioned example of a late Georgian cavalry holster pistol.

Condition Report:

• Lock signed and functioning with strong spring tension

• Barrel showing light age related pitting with visible London proof marks

• Stock with handling marks, small dents and wear consistent with age

• Brass furniture with good colour and patina

• Ramrod present with brass tip
