Antique Rare George III Carved Mahogany Folding Corner Table

19th century
Description

A charming antique George III carved mahogany folding corner table dating to around 1800, displaying excellent craftsmanship and beautifully detailed carving throughout.

The triangular top is richly carved with an impressive central quatrefoil motif surrounded by scrolling foliate decoration and a deeply carved border. The quality and depth of the carving is particularly striking and gives the table wonderful character and presence.

Designed to sit neatly into the corner of a room, the table features a clever folding action whereby the hinged top opens out to form a square occasional table when required, making it both decorative and highly practical.

The carved frieze is decorated with floral and foliate detail and stands on elegant cabriole legs with carved leaf decoration terminating in pad feet. The legs and apron are finely carved and reflect the craftsmanship associated with the late Georgian period.

A highly decorative and versatile piece which works beautifully as a corner table, lamp table or occasional table.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century Britain during the reign of King George III, folding corner tables were designed as versatile accent pieces to maximize space efficiency in formal interiors. They feature a triangular silhouette when closed and can expand or fit neatly into room junctions.

These tables were predominantly crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its tight grain and rich colouration. Construction techniques included hand-carved relief ornament, mortise and tenon joints, and gateleg or folding leaf supports.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, such as irregular hand-saw marks on the underside, hand-planed surfaces, and natural wood shrinkage along the grain over time. Carved decoration typical of the period includes foliate scrollwork, floral motifs, and pad or claw feet.

An antique corner table works as a decorative focal point in an underutilised corner, entrance hall, or landing alcove. Styling it with a table lamp, ceramic bowl, or small art piece balances its dark timber tones against contemporary painted backdrops.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber movement and finish cracking. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain.
