Pair of Light Mahogany Lyre-back Armchairs

19th century
Description

A refined pair of mahogany armchairs executed in the neoclassical taste, distinguished by elegant lyre-form backs and finely carved classical ornament. The rectangular crest rails display attractive figured mahogany panels framed by small carved rosettes, above a radiating fan motif that crowns the lyre splat composed of slender vertical reeds.

Gracefully curved arms terminate in tight scroll ends and are supported by spiral-turned baluster supports, introducing a subtle decorative contrast to the otherwise restrained classical structure. The rounded upholstered seats are covered in a pale patterned fabric and finished with decorative trim.

The chairs are raised on tapered, fluted legs headed by square blocks with carved detailing, reinforcing the neoclassical architectural vocabulary of the design. The warm mahogany frames show pleasing grain and careful craftsmanship throughout, with crisp carving to the arms, splats, and leg elements.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The lyre-back design originated in classical antiquity and became prominent in European furniture design during the late eighteenth century. Influenced by Neoclassical, Regency, and French Directoire styles, cabinetmakers incorporated the musical instrument motif into chair splats to reflect classical proportions and artistic elegance.

Neoclassical armchairs are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, or walnut, often featuring carved detailing or brass mounts. Seats were traditionally upholstered using woven silk, damask, or wool over horsehair and steel spring foundations.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of traditional hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, irregular timber graining, and natural wear to original finishes. Inspecting the underside of the seat frame often reveals hand-sawn timber marks and age-appropriate oxidisation.

Classic mahogany armchairs can be incorporated into contemporary settings as accent seating in a reading corner, flanking a console table, or positioned at the heads of a dining table. Pairing period woodwork with clean-lined modern art or neutral textiles creates a balanced contrast.

Timber surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and polished occasionally using a natural beeswax to maintain the finish. Keep wooden furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading.
