Jas Shoolbred & Co Oak Cabinet

19th century
Description

A late 19th-century oak display cabinet by Jas Shoolbred & Co, one of London’s most respected cabinetmakers. The maker’s stamp is visible to the interior door framing.

Formed in two parts, the cabinet features a glass-fronted upper section with adjustable shelving, ideal for display, set above a panelled base with cupboard storage and a central open recess, making it equally suited to a private interior or a retail or hospitality setting.

The design shows strong late Victorian and neoclassical influence, with turned balustrade galleries, fluted detailing, turned oak finials, carved floral roundels, and a softly shaped central crest to the cornice.

Crafted predominantly from solid oak, the cabinet displays a warm, well-aged surface with honest wear consistent with age and use. The internal shelf adjustment system and construction details are typical of high-quality late 19th-century manufacture.

Ideal as a statement display cabinet, shop fitting, or refined domestic dresser.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian glazed oak cabinet is a substantial storage piece originating from the late nineteenth century, designed with glass-fronted upper doors and solid lower cupboards for displaying books, china, or decorative items.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly used solid English or European oak, hand-blown glass panels, and solid brass drop handles or decorative hinges.

Authentic pieces by James Shoolbred & Co often feature stamped brass makers plates, impressed registration marks, or stamped serial numbers along drawer edges and rear backboards.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining room, living area, or hallway, filling the glazed shelves with neutral ceramics, art books, or glassware to balance the dark timber tones.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, while cleaning the glass panes with a non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a cloth.
