Tall Antique Kashmiri Table Lamp – Signed

This is a taller example of an early Kashmiri antique table lamp, unusually signed by the maker underneath, Ganemede, Srinagar, Kashmir. In excellent condition and a lovely shape, this Kashmiri antique table lamp has a blue painted background with fine gilt work decorations. In super condition and newly rewired using traditional braided flex. Dates to around 1915.

Originating in the Kashmir valley during the 15th century and influenced by Persian artisans, Kashmiri papier-mache and lacquered woodwork developed into a major decorative art form. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these intricate techniques were adapted for Western-style lighting and furnishings for export and colonial interiors.

Traditional pieces are built around a turned wooden or moulded paper pulp core, covered with a fine layer of plaster or smooth ground. Artisans then paint intricate arabesque designs using water-based pigments and seal the surface with protective clear lacquer.

Authentic items display fine hand-painted floral or geometric patterning, known as naqashi, often accompanied by gold leaf highlighting. True period pieces show gentle natural craquelure in the lacquer, slight asymmetry in the turned timber base, and occasionally regional artist signatures near the base.

Place the lamp base on a dark wood sideboard, console, or desk to highlight its detailed metallic patterning. Complement the piece with a plain silk or linen drum shade to maintain visual focus on the painted column base.
