Georgian Plum Pudding Mahogany Centre Table

19th century
Description

Very good quality Georgian “plum pudding” mahogany tilt top round centre table with beautiful book matched grain pattern, a fully beaded edge and stands on the turned pedestal with four swept legs and original brass lions paw feet castors. Circa 1800.

Wonderful rich colour to the mahogany, unusual for this style of table and the beaded edge is also a very nice touch of quality. Also worth mentioning is the brass work to the fixing bracket on the underside also being the original and gives a good solid feel.

This will make a fabulous centre table for a large hall, but originally used for a breakfast table for 4 in comfort and a cosy 5 to 6 diners.

Measurements:

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian centre table is a freestanding circular or octagonal table crafted during the Georgian era, intended to sit in the middle of a hallway, foyer, or grand drawing room.

High-grade dense timber such as Cuban mahogany, rosewood, and walnut was typically used, often featuring figured veneers like plum pudding or flame mahogany and accented with cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct hand-cut joinery, original brass catch mechanisms under the tabletop, turned central pedestals, and hand-carved reeded or splayed legs with brass castors.

Position the table in a spacious entrance hall or central room node, topped with a large ceramic vessel or sculptural piece to contrast historic wood grain with modern elements.

Apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying, and dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
