18th Century Mahogany & Brass Candlesticks

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality And Attractive 18th Century Georgian Pair Of Mahogany And Brass Candlesticks, Having Charming Foliate Cast Brass Nozzles Over Elegant Fluted, Turned Shafts, With Twisted Carving To Bottom Raised On Circular Moulded Disc Bases.

This design of candlestick was popularised during 18th century georgian times and then much copied throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. So naturally there are many, many later copies available which could be described as “in the georgian style” or similar. This pair however are undoubtedly 18th century and georgian.

Considering that these candlesticks date to the 18th century, they remain in relatively excellent condition, clearly they have been well loved and well looked after throughout the many years of their lives.

As you can see from the images they could originally be taken apart, but now only one of them appears to come apart easily.

Very much fit for their original purpose we can highly recommend these candlesticks from both a decorative and functional perspective and think they will look fabulous no matter where they are placed in the home, nor what they are placed on.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Georgian era, candlesticks evolved from cast metals to incorporate carved hardwoods such as mahogany, frequently featuring architectural elements including fluting, spiral twists, turned circular bases, and brass nozzles.

Craftsmen utilised dense hardwoods like mahogany, turning the shafts on lathes and hand-carving details such as fluting or barley twists. Brass sconces and drip pans were cast and fitted at the top to protect the wood from candle wax.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as natural wood shrinkage along the grain, minor hand-carving irregularities, and period-appropriate brass patination rather than modern uniform casting.

Place a pair on a contemporary sideboard, dining table, or mantelpiece to introduce warm timber tones and classical geometry against neutral walls or modern artwork.

Dust timber shafts regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain. Clean brass nozzles using a soft cloth while avoiding harsh liquid polishes near the wooden finish.
