Description

A beautiful antique Karadja rug, handwoven circa 1920 with a geometrical 3 medallion design on a terracotta field and deep indigo border. Fabulous secondary colours, especially the gold throughout the field and a highly decorative piece.

Size: 1.93m x 1.41m (6ft 4in x 4ft 8in)

This rug is in good condition with age related wear, slightly heavier in places (see photos). Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned. A couple of ‘bites’ to the corners (see photos), hence the price!

Karadja rugs originate from the village of Karadja in Northwest Persia, near the Heriz weaving region. Influenced by both Persian and Caucasian design traditions, these textiles are recognized for their distinct geometric patterns, tribal character, and durable construction.

Karadja carpets are hand-knotted using a hand-spun wool pile tied onto a strong cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes were historically employed to produce deep shades of red, navy blue, and ivory.

Authentic pieces feature a signature layout typically comprised of a central geometric diamond medallion flanked by stylized latch-hook or square motifs along the vertical axis. The knotting shows subtle hand-made irregularities, and the pile exhibits natural colour variation known as abrash.
